Background information |
The
Humanitarian Information Facilitation Centre (HIFC) is a non-profit
media development organization that was established in early
2009 to address an urgent need to streamline the flow of information
from the humanitarian sector to the general public and decision
makers. The organization is built on the belief that knowledge
forms the basis for all change and seeks to achieve this through
an innovative cooperation between the organization’s two
components:
- A Humanitarian
NGO Development Component that provides total communication
and information solutions to humanitarian non-governmental
organizations (HUNGOs) including strengthening of media
literacy and exploring strategies to packaging information
into accessible formats as well as building relationships
with the media.
- A
Media Development Component that supports and mentors journalists
and cooperates with editors to increase the quality and
quantity of humanitarian reporting.

Electronic
activism . . . get involved and use ICTs to advocate, lobby and mobilize.
Powerlessness
and silence go together. We should use our positions not as a shelter from the
world's reality, but as a platform from which to speak. A voice is a gift. It
should be cherished and used.

Atwood
