Details
CHIPAWO is Shona and it means "please give" or "give also". Founded in 1989, CHIPAWO is an arts education Trust that is all about sharing. Currently the Trust employs 35 people full-time and up to 70 part-time, including those who have graduated from CHIPAWO's programmes. Children of all backgrounds and abilities from age 4 and schoolchildren of all ages learn to sing, dance, play music, act, make videos and work together, communicate, develop confidence and life skills, build through criticism and so much more - in short, arts education for development and employment.

The Arts Education for Development and Employment Programme involves up to 70 centres all over Zimbabwe and includes the urban and rural disadvantaged as well as disabled children and an innovative Infants programme. CHIPAWO's arts educators are highly skilled and experienced and are available to work with other organisations where required. CHIPAWO, in partnership with UNICEF, UNESCO and other relevant organisations, has successfully conceived and implemented numerous projects with children and the girl child on HIV/AIDS, Gender, Child Rights, Justice and Poverty Reduction, among them being advocacy festivals, camps and clubs and the unique Girl Power centre.

CHIPAWO's performances unit is able to produce performances of all kinds by children of all ages as well as adults. These productions are contracted locally and many have featured in international festivals and tours. Among other things, CHIPAWO also makes traditional musical instruments, costumes and props, provides video services, courses and training as well as producing documentaries and television programmes. The Kwikstart media workshops on Saturday mornings are specially designed for children and young people who want to start early.

The Zimbabwe Academy of Arts Education for Development offers diplomas and certificates in Performing and Media Arts accredited by Midlands State University and many other short courses. Many CHIPAWO graduates are already making their mark in various professions, including a number of popular recording artists in Zimbabwe. Working closely with Zimtrade, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and Air Zimbabwe, CHIPAWO is increasingly playing a part in furthering Zimbabwe's trade and international relations through hosting cultural visits by children from countries such as China.

Get OUTraged, get INvolved

Our current electronic activism page focuses on the post election violence in Zimbabwe.

Escalating cases of organised violence and torture
900 victims have reported incidents of organised violence and torture. But this figure grossly underestimates the number of victims presenting countrywide as the violence is now on such a scale that it is impossible to properly document all cases. There have been 22 confirmed deaths but at least double that number have been reported but are yet to be confirmed. Read more from Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights

Land, retribution and elections
The immediate aftermath of Zanu PF's 2008 election defeat has included drastic consequences for the few remaining commercial farmers and their workers. The current surge in invasions and human rights violations on the farms is violent, widespread and systematic. Read more from Justice for Agriculture
