International Women's Day - March 08

Violence against women
Broken bodies — broken dreams: violence against women exposed offers a powerful testimony of the different types of gender-based violence experienced by women and girls worldwide throughout their lives, through the use of photographs, individual case studies and illustrative text. The publication is part of OCHA/IRIN’s ongoing campaign to highlight the issues of violence against women through film, text and photography. Visit our electronic activism page

Not just another murder
I got a notice from my local post office last week notifying me that I had received a parcel. Origin: Kenya. Turns out that my parcel from Kenya was a book, Broken bodies, broken dreams: violence against women exposed from IRIN. It seemed a very timely arrival seeing as 8th March is International Women’s Day. That night I started reading it in bed and any chance of sleep was swiftly snuffed out. We need to voice the violence, to hear the stories of all those affected by violence . . . Spreading the word, breaking down the taboos and exposing the violence that takes place among us is the first step towards effective action to reduce violence in our own societies.”
- Gro Harlem Brundtland

#2 - The whole head
The topic shifted back to me. I kept my eyes turned down, seething at the proprietary way so many men see women."Would you do her?" "Never. She's crazy." "How much would you pay me to do her?" "I'd do her for free. One's like her are like the devil in bed." Read more from Amanda Atwood

The rule of law in Zimbabwe
"I wish to emphatically state that we will push them out ...The present composition of the judiciary reflects that the country is in a semi-colonial state, half free, half enslaved", said Chinamasa. It is therefore crystal clear that the government, as announced by the Justice Minister in 2001, has "pushed out" independent judges and replaced them with bootlickers of the Mugabe regime. Read more

Political violence report: January 2006 - Overview
The month of January was relatively quiet in terms of political violence. This can be attributed to a number of reasons. The split in the MDC, following a decision on 12 October 2005, resulted in a pro-senate and an anti-senate faction being formed with one faction fielding candidates in November 26 Senate Elections and the other deciding not to. This split undoubtedly gave the ruling ZANU-PF party the impression that there was no credible opposition with which to contend so giving the MDC space to continue with their very public and acrimonious disagreements.
