Report irregularities during the March 2008 elections

With March 29th and our elections just around the corner, voter education is said to be already underway. But many people remain unaware of their rights or if they are, are not sure which avenues of complaint to explore in the event that they experience electoral irregularities. Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) is offering free pre-election legal services to individuals who want to secure their right to political participation.

We ask you to print out and share this information with colleagues, friends and neighbours.

Election Alert

On 29 March 2008 Zimbabwe will be holding its harmonized presidential, parliamentary and municipal elections. Zimbabweans will again be faced with the opportunity to exercise their democratic right and freedom to choose freely, through the ballot box, leaders with the mandate to securing a prosperous, peaceful and democratic Zimbabwe.

ZLHR urges anyone who has: -

  • been denied the right to register and have their name placed on the voters’ roll;
  • found their name missing from the voters’ roll and been denied re-registration (please note that 7 February 2008 is the deadline for registration of names on the voters’ roll);
  • been denied the right to inspect the voters’ roll;
  • been denied access to information about the constituency and/or ward in which s/he is to vote; or
  • in any way been hindered from participating in the forthcoming 29 March 2008 elections

To seek legal services to secure their right to political participation as enshrined in the Electoral Act.

Education is a Right - Power at the Polls

Report irregularities during the March 2008 elections
In our current electronic activism campaign we focus on the March 2008 elections.

Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every
society, in every family.
~ Kofi Annan

Michael’s quest for nomination: “there will be no problems”
Then back to the voter’s inspection station. There are now two police and one woman in civilian clothes. No, I am not on the voters’ roll. We check under Laban, then under Michael as a last name, all to no avail. So I produce papers, and we fill in a form. The officials are friendly, and very helpful, and cannot see why I am not on the roll (I have lived here, in this block of flats since 1995!) and make me double check the form before signing it, and that is done for the day. Come back tomorrow and we will have a response. Read more
